How Over: A Versatile Display Font for Modern Branding

I was recently tasked with creating a brand identity for a small, locally owned café that wanted to feel both welcoming and modern. The first step in any branding project is choosing the right typeface, and I found myself drawn to How Over—a cool outlined display font that immediately stood out for its clean, playful aesthetic.

As I began sketching out logo concepts, I knew the font had to reflect the café’s personality: friendly, approachable, yet slightly edgy. How Over had the perfect balance of charm and structure. Its outlined style gave it a sense of boldness without being overwhelming, and the cute, rounded edges added a touch of warmth that felt just right for a café setting.

First Impressions on the Logo Mockup

The initial mockup was simple: a circular badge with the café name in How Over. The outlined letters created a sense of depth and dimension, which made the logo pop against a minimalist background. I loved how the font didn’t feel too casual or too formal—it was just right for a space that needed to be inviting but still professional.

I tested the font at different sizes and noticed that even when scaled down, the outlines remained crisp and legible. That’s a big plus for logos that might appear on signage, menus, or promotional materials where readability is key.

Applying How Over to Brand Materials

Once the logo was approved, I moved on to other brand elements like packaging, social media graphics, and website headers. How Over worked seamlessly across all these platforms. On the café’s packaging, it gave the labels a fun, eye-catching look that caught attention without being distracting. For social media posts, the font added a layer of personality that resonated well with the target audience—mostly young professionals and students looking for a quick coffee break.

On the website, I used How Over as the headline font for the hero section. It helped establish visual hierarchy by drawing the eye to the most important message while keeping the rest of the content in a more neutral serif font. This contrast made the site feel balanced and easy to navigate.

I also experimented with using How Over on business cards. The outlined style looked great against a solid color background, and the font’s thickness made the text stand out clearly. Even on smaller formats, the font retained its character and didn’t lose any of its visual appeal.

Font Pairing and Design Consistency

One thing I always consider when selecting a display font is how it pairs with supporting typefaces. For this project, I paired How Over with a clean sans-serif font for body text. The contrast between the outlined display font and the straightforward sans-serif helped reinforce the café’s branding theme—playful yet polished.

I also tested a few script fonts to see if they would complement How Over, but ultimately, the sans-serif option felt more consistent with the overall tone. It wasn’t about matching styles perfectly; it was about creating a harmonious visual rhythm that guided the viewer through the content smoothly.

Practical Considerations for Client Work

If you’re considering using How Over in your next project, I recommend testing it early in the design process. Try it out on different surfaces—like a shop sign, a label sticker, or an Instagram post—to see how it behaves in various contexts. Pay attention to how it scales and whether it maintains clarity at different sizes.

Also, check the font’s available styles and weights. While How Over is primarily a display font, having access to alternates or ligatures can add subtle variations that enhance the design without overcomplicating it. And don’t forget to confirm the licensing terms, especially if you plan to use it in commercial projects or client work.

For this café project, I made sure to stick with the outlined version of How Over throughout all brand assets. This consistency helped build recognition and reinforced the brand’s identity across multiple touchpoints.

Whether you're designing for a small boutique, a skincare brand, or a creative studio, How Over offers a unique blend of style and functionality that can elevate your design work. It’s not just a font—it’s a tool that helps tell a story and connect with your audience in a meaningful way.
